William Charles Hengen was born in Delafield, Wisconsin, on 24 October 1871, the son of Charles and Martha (French) Hengen. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1897 and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Joseph Francis in St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral in Indianapolis in 1900. From 1897 to 1898, while still only a deacon, he served as rector of St. James, South Bemd. He later left to become rector of St. James, Vincennes, and then moved to Wheaton, Illinois. While there, he returned to Indiana and married at Flora on 3 May 1905, Alice Tyler Fay Eastham of Indianapolis. He moved from Wheaton to Ottumwa, Iowa, to become rector of Trinity Church. He remained there at least through 1920, eventually moving to Faribault, Minnesota, where he died of a heart attack on 11 November 1939.
