Mitchell was born in Scotland about 1831, but little is known about his background. He married Annie (__). In 1864, he was rector of St. John's Church in Gillespie, Illinois. He moved to Indiana in 1869 to assume the rectorship of St, Stephen's in New Harmony, a post he held in conjunction with a missionary post at North Vernon. He moved to Goshen in 1872 and remained until 1874. He then moved to Christ Church in Springfield, Illinois, and a year later into Missouri. By 1880 he was teaching at a religious school in Owensboro, Kentucky. His date and place of death are unknown.
