McGonigle was born in Londonderry in what is now Northern Ireland on 8 December 1856, the son of George and Anne (___) McGonigle. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1881 by the Bishop of Ripon. From 1889 to 1893, he served a church in Litchfield, England. He then moved to Minnesota, where he served missions at Marshall and Pipestone. He married Eileen Augusta Hillary on 22 August 1895 in Whitby, Ontario, the record showing his address as Marshall, Minnesota. From 1896 to 1897 he was in Tower, Minnesota. He came to Indiana and served briefly at St. Paul's, Gas City, and at St. Paul's. Hammond, from 1897 to 1898. He later moved to Ontario and served at Islington. He died in York, Ontario, on 29 July 1933.
