Fairchild was born on 27 July 1810 in Essex, New York, the son of Erastus and Nancy (Peck) Fairchild. He married Barbara Fitch on 13 February 1832 in Cambridge, New York. He served as rector of a church at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, from 1840 to 1844. He then came to Indiana and did missionary work at St. John's, Lafayette, in 1847, and at Trinity, Logansport, in 1848. He became rector of Christ Church, Hudson, Ohio, and was enumerated there in 1850 and 1860. He closed out his career at Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and died there on 8 March 1879. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery there.
