Samuel Edson was born in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on 28 March 1835, the son of John and Mary Ann (Bass) Edson. He graduated from Trinity College in 1859 and General Theological Seminary in 1863. He married Mary Miranda Burr. In 1850 he worked as an attorney in Bridgewater. By the 1860s he had settled in Indiana, where Bishop Upfold ordained him in 1863. He served as a missionary and rector of St. Mary's Church, Delphi, from 1864 to 1866 and was also at St. John's Crawfordsville. He then went to Galena and Dixon, Illinois, and by 1870 was rector of Grace Church, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From 1883 to 1885 he was rector of a church in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and then became rector of Christ Church, Newton, New Jersey. He was at Navesink, New Jersey, in the 1890s, and by 1900 was in Kent County, Maryland, serving as rector of Shrewsbury Parish. He returned to Delphi to live with his married daughter in 1910 but died the following year on 14 April 1911 in New York City. He was buried in All Saints Memorial Church Cemetery in Navesink.
