Samuel Campbell Montgomery Orpen was born at Bridgeville House, Kilgarvan, County Kerry, Ireland, on 23 August 1849, the son of Edward Henry and Francis Everina (Heatley) Orpen. He came to America in May 1864 and graduated from Columbia in 1872. He married Susan Anna Hill. Moving to Indiana, he became a deacon in 1875 and a priest in 1876 by Bishop Talbot. His first assignment was to St. Mark's Parish in Lima, Indiana (now Howe), prior to the establishment of the military school. He remained there until 1885, then moved Rhode Island to become rector of St. Philip's Church in Crompton. He died in Rhode Island on 21 March 1900 and was buried in St. Philip's Episcopal Cemetery in West Warwick.
