Long was born on 12 June 1885 in Valle, Missouri, the son of Benjamin and Helen Long. He did missionary work at the Church of the Holy Communion in St. Louis and at St. Paul's Church in Palmyra, Missouri, in 1914. He was called to the Diocese of Northern Indiana to serve as Archdeacon in 1916. Based in Kokomo, he served a number of missions (most unorganized), including Warsaw, Rensselaer, Monticello, Montpelier, Rochester, Huntington, Argos (St. Luke's), Columbia City, and Kokomo. He also served occasionally at Trinity Church in Peru. In 1920, he was called to be rector of St. James Church in South Bend, where he remained until 1923. He then moved to North Platte, Nebraska, to become rector of the Church of Our Savior, followed in 1926 by a missionary post at Brainerd and Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He died in Faribault, Minnesota, on 2 December 1937 and is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery. He was unmarried.
