Rev. Robert Earl Hood

The Rev. Robert Earl Hood was born on 29 February 1936 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of G. Robert and Blanche (Tubbs) Hood. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1957, attended Union Theological Seminary in 1959 and later General Theological Seminary in 1960. He later attended the University of Chicago and received a Ph.D. in 1963. He was ordained a deacon and priest in 1960. Because of his academic credentials, he was the John Hay Whitney Fellow at Oxford University from 1962 to 1963, and later an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellow in 1967. He began his career as a priest as curate of St. Philip's Church in New York City from 1960 to 1962 and later that year was curate of the Chapel of the Intercession in New York City. Upon finishing his degree at the University of Chicago, he came to Gary as rector of St. Augustine's, serving there until 1967. He then returned to England and joined the staff of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford. He later taught at Union Theological Seminary and served on the staff of Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa. He later became director of the Center for African American Studies at Adelphi University  and died in New York City on 9 August 1994.
