Holmes was born in St. Catharine's, Ontario, pm 10 October 1916, the son of Walter Percival and Sarah Alice (Hutton) Holmes. He married Ruth Evelyn Elsdon in 29 July 1944. He graduated from Huron College in Canada in 1945, having been ordained a deacon in 1942. He was made a priest later in 1945. He immigrated to the United States, serving as priest-in-charge of St. James Church in Detroit from 1946 to 1948 and assistant rector of St. Matthew's, Detroit, from 1948 to 1949. He came to Indiana as rector of Trinity Church, Logansport, from 1949 to 1950, during which time he also had charge of St. Mary's Church in Delphi. He moved to Pennsylvania to take charge of St. Mary's in Williamsport and Our Savior in Montoursville, serving there from 1950 to 1953. He then became rector of Christ Church, Berwick, and St. Gabriel, Coles Creek, Pennsylvania, from 1953 to 1958. He moved to Yonkers, New York, as rector of Christ Church from 1958 to 1965, then moved to Lewiston, Maine as rector of Trinity Church from 1965 to 1968. He retired there and did general missionary work for the diocese from 1966 to 1969. He died in Staunton, Virginia, on 4 August 2000 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Camden, Maine.
