Adams was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on 15 November 1810, the son of Richard and Mary (Turvill) Adams. He married Martha Isham on 5 December 1833 on Colchester, Connecticut. He spent the early part of his ministry in Kentucky, and in 1841 was transferred tot he Diocese of Indiana. He became rector of St. Paul's Church, Mishawaka, and oversaw the construction of the first church, a Greek Revival structure on the banks of the St. Joseph River. He remained there until 1846 and was also responsible for helping to organize St. John's Church in Bristol. He returned to the East, and in 1850 was stationed in Cape Vincent, New York. Two years later he became the first rector of the Church of the Messiah in Rhinebeck, New York. He lived in Waterford, New York, in 1855, and Brooklyn in 1865. He died in Philadelphia on 25 December 1895 and was buried in Yantic Cemetery, Norwich, Connecticut.
