John Trimble was born in New Jersey on 26 November 1831, the son of John Matthew Trimble and wife Jane (__). He attended Burlington College, graduating in 1855. That same year he married Emily Jane Trimble (no relation) on 20 August 1855 at St. George's Church in New York City. He moved to Indiana upon graduation and performed missionary work at Trinity Church, Logansport, from 1855 to 1857. He then moved to Shelbyville, Kentucky, to become chaplain and a professor at Shelby College. He also assisted in the formation that year of St. James Episcopal Church in Shelbyville. He left Kentucky during the Civil War and came to Washington, D.C., going to work as a clerk in the Treasury Department. Later he became one of seven founders of The Grange and served as its National Treasurer. He died in Washington, D.C., on 30 December 1902 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery there.
