John Portmess was born in Morgan County, West Virginia, on 14 June 1830. He was ordained a deacon in 1864 and a priest in 1865. He began his career at St. Mary's Church in Fayette, Missouri, from 1864 to 1865. He moved from there to Christ Church in Collinsville, Illinois, where he served from 1865 to 1870. He moved from there to serve briefly at St. Thomas Church in Plymouth, Indiana, from 1870 to 1871. He then moved to St. Andrew's Church in Chariton, Iowa, from 1871 to 1874; to the Church of the Good Shepherd, Terrell, Texas, from 1874 to 1887; to another CHurch of the Good Shepherd in Cloverdale, California, fro, 1887 to 1890, and then to the Church of the Advent in Brownsville, Texas, from 1890 to the time of his death. He died at Brownsville on 8 November 1897 and is buried in the Old City Cemetery.
