Rev. John Oliver Barton

The Rev. John O. Barton was born on 23 February 1826 in Hancock, Maryland, the son of Lloyd H. and Frances (Bean) Barton. He was ordained in 1847. One of his first assignments was to St. Mark's Church in what was then Lima, Indiana, becoming its first settled minister. He moved from there in 1854 to become rector of St. John's, Lafayette, where he was reportedly a young and energetic priest. He resigned in 1856 due to the ill health of his first wife and took a position as a missionary in Superior, Wisconsin, near Lake Superior. His first wife died, and he married second in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, on 28 April 1859, Anna Maria McIlhenny. He appears to have spent the remainder of his career in Maryland. He was listed as rector of Grace Church in Wicomico in 1865, and by 1870 was settled at St. Andrew's Church in Princess Anne. He died in Baltimore on 4 March 1890 and was buried in St. Andrew's Episcopal Churchyard.
