Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

John Heyward McKenzie was born in Bourneville, Ohiko, on 31 May 1862, the son of Henry B. and Amanda Ellen (Gregg) McKenzie. He attended Wesleyan University and Mount Union College, receiving a Bachelor's degree in 1882, and Boston University, receiving a Master's degree in 1884. He then began his career at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music as a teacher. In 1890 he became the head of the Ohio Military Institute at College Hill, during which time he was ordained a deacon in 1892 and a priest in 1893. A year later he became the first principal of Culber Military Academy, and in 1895 accepted a call from Bishop John Hazen White to become rector of St. Mark's, Lima (later Howe), and head of the Howe Military Academy. He held the position until his death on 3 August 1920. During his tenure he built up the school to make it a flourishing institution. He was buried in St. James Chapel on its campus.
