John Gierlow was born in Syddanmark, Denmark, on 22 May 1821. He came to Maine before 1843, when he married Clarissa E. Lucke in Portland, Maine. He served as a chaplain during the Civil War in a hospital at Prairie du Chien. Afterward he moved to California and was at St. Francis Church, Fortuna, and in Eureka, before returning to the Midwest. He served as rector of St. Paul's Mishawaka between 1871 and 1873. By 1880 he served a church in St. Louis, Missouri. He died there on 6 March 1895 and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
