James Hervey Lee was born in Savannah, Ashland County, Ohio, on 11 July 1830, the son of William and Mary (Sinkey) Lee. He graduated from Kenyon College and was ordained at St. James Church, Mount Vernon, Ohio, in 1862. Between 1864 and 1867, he was rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, La Porte. He married Laura Canfield in Medina County, Ohio, on 25 June 1866. By 1870, he and his family moved to Kansas, where he was rector of St. Paul's Church in Manhattan. He also served as a professor of Greek and Latin for nine years at the Kansas State Agricultural College. He died in Manhattan, Kansas, on 8 January 1917, and is buried in Sunset Cemetery.
