James Banks Mead was born on 9 September 1847 in Medina, Ohio, the son of Whitman and Jane Maria (Hanson) Mead. He attended Kenyon College and graduated from Berkeley Divinity School in 1878. He was ordained a deacon that same year and a priest in 1879. His first posting came as a teacher at the Ury House in Philadelphia. He then moved north to St. Catherine's, Ontario, serving as an assistant at St. George's Church from 1878 to 1881, returning to the U.S. to be rector of St. John's, Grand Rapids, Michigan, from 1881 to 1883, and then heading back to Ontario and marrying at Woodbridge on 11 June 1884, Margaret Elizabeth Fielding. He was rector of a church there from 1883 to 1887 and at Niagara-on-the-Lake from 1887 to 1889. He came to Indiana later in 1889 as rector of St. James, Goshen, where he remained until 1892. He moved from there to Osceola Mills, Pennsylvania, and then to Trinity Church, Chambersburg, in 1893. He was later at St. John's Church in Dover, New Jersey, Trinity Church in Whitehall, New York, and the Church of the Memorial in Middleville, New York. He died at an unknown location on 2 May 1912, according to a report of alumni from Berkeley Divinity School.
