Dean was born on 26 January 1838 in Buffalo, New York, the son of Benjamin Wright and Sophia (Fox) Dean. He married Eunice Elvira (Gallup) Spickerman on 28 August 1872 in St. Clair, Michigan. He served a church in Wampun, Wisconsin, before coming to Michigan City in 1890 to serve as rector of Trinity. He remained only a year. He later served St. John's Church in Moorhead, Minnesota, St. Barnabas in Greensboro, North Carolina, and a church in Atlanta. He died in Greensboro in January 1911 and is buried in Green Hill Cemetery.
