Roy Thompson was born in St. Michael, Barbados, on 28 August 1935, the son of Ivan Aaron and Wilhemenia Eugene (Headley) Thompson. He grew up on Barbados and attended the Lodge School, then served in the Royal Militia. He went to England, attended the Hostel of the Resurrection in Leeds, from 1960 to 1962, and served a two-year stint in the British army, when he was stationed in Germany and worked as a paramedic. Returning to Barbados in 1964, he went to seminary at Codrington College, graduating in 1967. He later attended Virginia Theological Seminary in 1981. He was ordained a deacon in 1967 and a priest in 1969. He married Yvette Clydel John on 1 February 1969. He served the Church of Barbados from 1967 to 1977, stationed in a number of parishes that included Christ Church, St. Christopher's. St. Mark's, and St. Catherine's. Immigrating to the United States in 1976, he became rector of St. Stephen's Church in Petersburg, Virginia, from 1977 to 1983. He was the Episcopal chaplain of Virginia State University from 1979 to 1983. He then moved to Indiana to become rector of St. Augustine's, Gary, serving until 1989. While at Gary he became interested in Episcopal World Mission and was chair of the companion diocese program with Enugu, Nigeria. Upon leaving Gary in 1989, he became rector of St. Paul's Church in Flatbush, New York, serving until 1991. He married his second wife, Eleanor Alma Tillett, in 1992 in Brooklyn. He then became an assistant priest at St. Augustine's in Brooklyn from 1992 to 1993 and moved to the Church of the Redeemer from 1995 to 2000. He then became seriously ill and was in a coma for three years, finally dying in January 2003. His remains were returned to Barbados for burial.
