Torrence was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on 25 June 1854, the son of George F. Torrence and wife Ann Rebecca (Finley/Findley). He received a BA degree from Yale in 1875 and was ordained a deacon in 1878 and a priest in 1879, His first assignment was to St. Peter's Church in Oxford, Connecticut, from 1878 to 1879, He moved from there to Trumbull, Connecticut, from 1879 to 1881, and then at St. Thomas Church in Bethel from 1881 to 1890. From there he moved to Zanesville, Ohio, to be rector of St. James Church from 1890 to 1896. He then went to Cambridge, Ohio, from 1897 to 1900. Afterward he moved to Indiana, serving as rector of Gethsemane in Marion from 1900 to 1910. He died on 21 November 1918 in Butler County, Ohio, and was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.
