George John Magill was born on 19 September 1831 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He married Sarah McDonald Tait and in 1861 resided in Drummond, Quebec. He came to the United States and served as rector of St. Paul's, La Porte, from 1869 to 1875. He moved to Rhode Island and became rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, Newport and another church on Narragansett, serving until his death in New York City on 25 May 1898. He is buried in St. Anne's Cemetery, Richmond, Quebec.
