Rev. George Bartly Engle

The Rev. George Bartly Engle was born in Genesee, New York, on 10 January 1809 the son of Joseph and ELizabeth (Lemon) Engle. He married Abigail Edson on 21 May 1838 in Richfield, New York. He served as rector of Christ Church in Pompey, New York, and at nearby Lysander between 1837 and 1839. Between 1841 and 1843, he was rector at Trinity, Michigan City. By 1850 he had moved to Port Huron to become rector of Grace Church, where he served until 1859. In 1864 he was in Wisconsin, serving as a chaplain in the 14th Wisconsin Infantry. He returned to Indiana, serving as an assistant at Christ Church, Indianapolis, before becoming the founding rector of the Church of the Holy Innocents in 1869. He remained in Indianapolis until his death on 17 March 1898. He is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. His son, the Rev. Willis D. Engle, was later rector of Christ Church in Huntington, Indiana.
