Gale Colyer Brittain was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on 15 September 1917, the son of Hugh Colyer and Eva Leonne (Hiscutt) Brittain. He studied at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Nashotah House, graduating in 1944 and being ordained the same year. He married Lois Hile on 5 July 1947. He began his career as a curate at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Wayne from 1944 to 1945. He moved from there to be priest-in-charge of St. James, Goshen, in 1945 and rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd, East Chicago, from 1946 to 1951. He then became rector of Trinity Church in Peru, Indiana, from 1951 to 1957. He finally left Indiana to become vicar of Holy Apostles Church in Oneida, Wisconsin, from 1857 to 1960, then rector of St. John the Baptist Church in Wausau from 1960 to 1964. His final post was as rector of St. Michael and All Angels Church in Berwyn from 1964 to 1982. He died in Muskegon, Michigan, on 25 February 2009 and was buried at Nashotah House.
