Groton was born on Avon, Massachusetts, on 29 August 1912, the son of Percy L. and Jessie Blanche (Thayer) Groton. He married Paula Helene Kinkel on 26 November 1936 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. In 1940 he headed a church in Kenosha, but he came to Indiana in 1942 as rector of St. Paul's Mishawaka. He remained until 1951, when he moved to Mequon, Wisconsin, as the first vicar of St. Boniface Church. He died in Littleton, Colorado, on 6 April 2000, and was buried in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
