Van Deerlin was born in India on 27 August 1846, the son of Henri and Mary Anne (Baird) Van Deerlin. The father was a physician born in Holland and the mother in Scotland. Van Deerlin had a long and varied career. He was taken to England in his youth and attended St. Augustine School, Canterbury. He spent two terms at Trinity College Cambridge and later St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. He received a BA in 1869 and an MA in 1874. He married Mary Marshall on 4 March 1868 in South Stoneham, Hampshire, England. He worked as a deacon in Worcester in 1869, and was curate at Birmingham from 1869 to 1870. From 1870 to 1871 he was curate of Whittlebury with Silverstone, Northamptonshire, and then from 1871 to 1872 served All Saints Berbice in British Guiana. He returned to England and served churches at Romsey Abbey, Hampshire, and Syderstone, Norfolk, until 1876. He then immigrated with his family to the United States and settled in Indiana. Between 1877 and 1878 and again from 1883 to 1884, he was rector of St. John's in Elkhart. From there he went briefly to Rhode Island as rector of St. Barnabas in Appanaug. Between 1885 and 1888 he served in New Haven, Connecticut, as rector of Christ Church. He then went went again in 1888 to serve as a missionary at the Rosebud Agency in Dakota Territory. He became a naturalized citizen and took charge as superintendent of an Indian school through 1892. For the next two years he served as a rector and superintendent at Whitaker Hall in Reno, Nevada, and then went to Grass Valley, California, near Nevada City, where he also served as examining chaplain to the Bishop of Northern California. He moved to Hawaii in 1899, where he became rector of St. Augustine's in Kohala, remaining there until 1901. He then returned to the continental United States and served two years as rector of St. Stephen's Church in Ballard, Washington. Between 1904 and 1911, he performed missionary work in southern California and was rector of St. James, San Diego, from 1919 to 1922. His last years were spent in the Los Angeles and Long Beach area, where he became canon at the Cathedral of St. Paul. He died in Glendale, California, on 26 February 1936.
