Elton Hoyt was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 2 February 1856, the son of James Madison and Mary Ella (Beebe) Hoyt. He served as a lay reader at St. John's, Bristol, until Bishop White ordained him to the diaconate about 1919. He served there as deacon for two years until illness forced his resignation in 1920, at which time White sent the Rev. Edwin Smith of South Bend to care for the Bristol mission. Hoyt was given charge of St. Luke's in Hartford City when he recovered, but later convention journals list him without a church. He moved to Los Angeles, where he was enumerated in 1930, but he later returned to Cleveland, where he died unmarried on 3 April 1938. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery there.
