Purdy was born in Sharon, Connecticut, on 29 March 1834, the son of the Rev. Lucius Marc and Laura Elizabeth (Ward) Purdy. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1857, then moved to Indiana. He married at New Albany on 11 July 1863, Charlotte Maria Shipman. He became rector of Trinity Church, Logansport in 1869 and stayed until 1879, accepting the post on the condition that the old church be demolished and a new church built. Purdy led the drive for its construction.He moved from Logansport to Winona, Minnesota, and later to Minneapolis, where he resided in 1900 and 1910. He died in Buhl, Missouri, on 8 April 1919, but was buried in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis.
