Earl Ray Hart was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on 5 July 1894, the son of Samuel H. and Evalyn (Pearce) Hart. He married Elizabeth Margaret Rothenhoefer in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, on 28 July 1918. He began his ministerial career as a chaplain in Pittsburgh in 1925. However, by 1927 he had returned to Indiana to become rector of Trinity Michigan City, where he served until 1938. He moved from there to Louisville and in 1948 to Anniston, Alabama, to take charge of St. Michael and All Angels Church, He retired from there in 1966 and died in Prospect, Kentucky, on 18 July 1985.
