Douglas Irvine Hobbs was born in Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia, on 9 March 1860, the son of John Ransom and Susannah (Rose) Hobbs. He attended Phiadelphia Divinity School, graduating in 1889 the same year as his ordination by Bishop Dudley. He served as a missionary at St. Peter's Church, Germantown, Pennsylvania, from 1889 to 1890, and then married Jeannie Dean Brown in Warren, Ohio, on 25 September 1890. He moved to Louisville, Kentucky for a year between 1890 and 1891. He came to Indiana to serve as rector of Trinity Church, Logansport, from 1891 to 1895. From there he moved to Little Rock, Arkansas, to become dean of Trinity Cathedral, from 1895 to 1899. By 1900 he was serving a church in Nebraska City, Nebraska. In 1910 he was in Topeka, Kansas, in 1920 in Church Hill, Maryland, and in 1930 in Rocky Mount, Virginia. He remained in Virginia, eventually becoming rector of a church in Salem, Virginia. He died in Roanoke on 25 October 1943 and is buried with his wife's family in Oakwood Cemetery, Warren, Ohio.
