David Funsten Ward was born in Winchester, Virginia, on 18 September 1863, the son of George W. and Julia Ann (Funsten) Ward. He graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1893 and was ordained a deacon the same year. He became a priest in 1895 and moved to Texas, serving at St. Mark's, San Antonio, for 1895 to 1896 and also as a missionary in western Texas. He was briefly in the Diocese of Indiana and served for a time at St. Mary's, Delphi, in 1896. He married Cornelia S> Ewing in Alexandria, Virginia, on 14 October 1897. He returned to Uvalde, Texas, in 1898, and then moved to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to serve St. Mary's Wadleigh Parish from 1899 to 1901. He died in Rockville, Maryland, on 24 July 1908, and was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester.
