Stout was born in Painesville, Ohio, on 27 August 1845, the son of the Rev. Charles Brockden Stout and wife Laura (Chapin). The father had been one of the founders of St. Paul's Church in Mishawaka. The younger Charles received a BA degree in 1876 and later graduated from Kenyon College with an MA in 1886. He was ordained a deacon in 1871 and a priest in 1873. His ministerial career had begun in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he served as a missionary from 1873 to 1876, followed by Marshalltown, Iowa, from 1876 to 1878. He then became rector of St. John's Church in Kalamazoo, serving there from 1878 to 1883. While there he married Harriet M. Strong in Grand Rapids on 5 November 1883. He was forced to retire for ill health between 1883 and 1885, but then returned to active ministry in Toledo, Ohio, from 1885 to 1887, and Petoskey, Michigan, from 1887 to 1893. He came to Indiana later that year to become rector of St. James, Goshen, serving from 1893 to 1898, and was also given charge of the nearby mission of Trinity in Kendallville. He then returned to northern Michigan, becoming rector of Grace Church in Traverse City and doing missionary work in the neighboring towns of East Jordan, Central Lake, and Charlevoix. For reasons of health he left Traverse City in 1906 and became rector of St. Paul's Church in Key West, Florida. He died in Oak Park, Illinois, on 25 April 1925.
