Champlin was born in Otis, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, on 30 May 1870, the son of Albert Benton and Ruth Wood (Ellsworth) Champlin. He married Lucy Dawes Crouse in 1901. Little is known about his career. He was rector of St. John's Elkhart from 1906 to 1910. In 1920 he resided at Lysander, New York, and in 1930 he was in Red Hook, New York. He died in Red Hook in 1956 and was buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.
