Boswell was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, on 4 August 1918, the son of Charles and Nellie May (Ray) Boswell. He received a Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in 1946 and graduated from Nashotah House in 1948. He was ordained a deacon and priest in 1949. He married Linda Louise Blair on 25 October 1941. He was curate of St. John's in Elkhart from 1949 to 1952, during which time he also served as vicar of St. John's in Bristol. He then moved to Illinois to become vicar of St. George's Church in Macomb and St. Thomas Church in Busnell from 1952 to 1958. He was vicar of Grace Church in Pontiac, Illinois, from 1958 to 1964, then became vicar of Good Samaritan in Oak Park and associate rector of Grace Church in Oak Park from 1966 to 1967. He became rector of Christ Church in Streator, Illinois, from 1967 to 1978, and finally was chaplain of the Cook County Correctional Institution from 1978 until his retirement in 1984. He died in Naperville on 27 January 2006 and was buried in the columbarium of the Church of the Holy Nativity.
