Maddox was born in Newton, Ohio, on 19 May 1896, the son of Thomas Whitmer and Sarah (Durham) Maddox. He was a graduate of Racine College and later married Virginia L. (___). He became rector of St. Thomas Church, Plymouth, Indiana, in 1936 and remained there until 1939. He then moved to Chicago as rector of the Church of the Atonement. He died there on 20 March 1941.
