Lawrence Cecil Ferguson was born on 9 June 1894 in Temple, Texas, the son of Emmett Lee and Mary Logan (Pennypacker) Ferguson. He moved to Superior, Wisconsin, when he was a boy and later graduated from the University of Chicago and Nashotah House, the latter at age 23 in 1917. That same year he married Winifred E. Long on 28 June 1917. He served as a missionary at Trinity Church, Baraboo, Wisconsin, and was later rector of Grace Church in Hinsdale, Illinois. He later served as an assistant to Bishop Stewart of Chicago, serving at St. Simon's Church and at St. Luke's, Evanston. He came to South Bend as rector of St. James Parish in 1928 and remained there until his death on 6 September 1942. He also had charge of St. John's, Bristol, from 1937 to 1939.
