Asa Appleton Abbott was born in Macon County, Missouri, on 12 July 1850, the son of William Dudley and Mahulda (Kirby) Abbott. He married Ada Downman Butler. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1879 and the priesthood in 1884 by Bishop Knickerbacker. He moved to Faribault, Minnesota, where he worked as an assistant at the Cathedral from 1884 to 1887. He then returned to Indiana as rector of St. James, Vincennes from 1887 to 1889. He also did missionary work in the Vincennes area until 1894. He then moved to La Porte to become rector of St. Paul's from 1894 to 1895. Afterward he moved to Warren, Ohio, to become rector of Christ Church. He later moved to North Carolina, becoming rector of St. John's Church in Hendersonville. He died there on 9 August 1931 and was buried in its churchyard.
