Almon Gregory was born on 4 January 1814 at Auburn, Cayuga County, New York, the son of Matthew Fitch Gregory and wife Nancy (Seymour). A graduate of General Theological Seminary in 1847, he married Charlotte Schroeppel in 1850 in New York. He was rector of Zion Church, Rome, New York, and St. Thomas Church, Bath, New York, for seven years. He then came to Indiana, and between 1855 and 1861, served as rector of St. Paul's, La Porte. He also played a missionary role at St. John's Bristol, and St. Thomas, Plymouth. During the Civil War he served as an Army chaplain. In 1865 he returned to New York and served a parish at Syracuse. He died there on 27 November 1896 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
