Adelbert McGinnis was born in Philmont, New York, in January 1866, the son of Jacob W. and Harriet (Melius) McGinnis. Little is known about his background, though he lived in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1900. In 1901 he was an assistant at Grace Church in Albany, New York, From 1904 to 1905 he was in Peru, Indiana, as rector of Trinity Church. He appears to have moved frequently afterward. In 1912 he was rector of All Saints Church in Huntington, Florida. He then moved to Maryland and was dismissed into the Diocese of Bethlehem in 1918, but that same year he became rector of St John's Church in Catharine, New York, where he remained until 1923. He later moved to Pennsylvania and served churches in Lawrenceville and Muncy, but by 1930 he lived in New York City. He died in West Hartford, Connecticut, on 16 February 1937 and was unmarried.
