Gorrell was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, on 23 April 1831, the son of Jesse and Sophia Gorrell. Brought to Wells County, Indiana, when a child, he married Mary J. Ellison on 25 April 1857 in Indiana.He lived in Greencastle, Indiana, in 1860 and was later ordained a priest in 1871. He was briefly at St. Mary's Delphi and St. Mark's Lima as a missionary that year. However, by 1876, he had become rector of St. Paul's in Hicksville, Ohio. He remained there until 1878, when he moved to Defiance, Ohio. He died in Chicago on 23 May 1914 and was buried in Forest Home Cemetery.
