William Galpin was born in Washtenaw County, Michigan, on 14 February 1859, the son of Freeman Pinckney and Mary (Ruthruff) Galpin. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1882, and that same year married Helen B. Grisson in Ann Arbor on 25 December 1882. He became superintendent of the public school system in St. Clair, Michigan, from 1882 to 1886, and during the same period seems to have read for orders. He was ordained a deacon in 1886 and a priest in 1887. That year he became an assistant minister at St. Andrew's Church in Ann Arbor, where he served from 1887 to 1890. He then became rector of Grace Church in Ishpeming, Michigan, from 1890 to 1894. He moved to Indiana later that year to become rector of St. John's Church in Elkhart, where he oversaw the construction of a new church building. He remained in Elkhart until 1903, and then moved to Muskegon, Michigan, as rector of St. Paul's. He retired from that position in 1917 due to ill health and died there on 26 May 1933.
