George John Sturgis was born in Kingsville, Ohio, on 18 January 1885, the son of John Conklin and Clara (Parmelee) Sturgis. He was a graduate of Kenyon College and in his early years as a priest moved frequently. He was at St. Martin's New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1914; at St. Steven's in East Haddam, Connecticut, in 1915; at St. Steven's Church in Bennington, Vermont, in 1916; in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1918; and St. Matthew's Church in Los Angeles in 1920. He served briefly at St. Luke's in Hartford City, Indiana, from 1920 to 1921, before moving on to Trinity Church in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, later that year. In 1930 he was living with relatives in Quincy, Florida, without occupation. He died in Los Angeles on 14 October 1947 and was buried in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
