Justice

Unfortunately, it is with very little frequency that victims of human trafficking or contemporary slavery receive any justice. These images display the chain of events of one of these precious few times. The second image, Justice Explained, delineates why it can be so difficult for these perpetrators to be charged for their crimes. Not only do these criminals usually have the funding for very powerful lawyers thanks to their illicit profits, but the argument of "ownership" can be quite hard to prove in the modern world(Smith, Luers, Dean). As outright slavery has been outlawed for quite some time, modern "slave owners" are aware that they can must be much more subtle. While it might not seem subtle to own a brothel, in Australia prostitution is actually legal, so this was not one of the dominate factors of the charge. The true conviction for slavery would be in proving that this was not legal prostitution because the women did not consent and Wei was indeed holding them against their will. In many cases this likely brings the court back to the question of "What is Choice?" as manipulations of circumstance and plausible deniability make "beyond reasonable doubt" slightly harder to achieve. One of the most unfortunate parts of the situation is that as an average citizen, one of the only things one can do is spread awareness and empathy. Even this work, Motions, does not argue for action or immediate change as there is nothing that can be done on the immediate scale to help the majority of these victims or put a stop to this terror. But still, it is better to be aware and supportive rather than hide in the dark and ignore what is going on in the world.
