Introduction
At the beginning of primary campaigning in the summer of 2015 Donald Trump seemed like an unlikely candidate to many. However, he took the world by storm due to his use of social media. Trump got the most media coverage of any republican candidate in the primary because of his use of twitter. He used twitter to not only further his political agenda, but also to tear other candidates down. This resulted in other candidates to join and use social media in this election. This trend is now continuing in the general election with Trump and Clinton.
While there are many subtopics that could come from the use of social media in an election I will be focusing on three:
- Trump’s use of social media to get more news coverage than any other candidate in the Republican primary.
- The amount of money that Trump saved, compared to other Republican candidates, due to his use of social media
- The use of social media in the general election and its negative effects on each candidate’s legitimacy.
