Social Media's Effect on the 2016 Presidential Election

Candidates and their Budgets

Donald Trump managed to win the primary by a landslide.  He won 34 out of 50 states.  He managed to do all of this with the one lowest campaign budgets.  As of February Trump had only spent $10 million.  While this may seem like a lot it is nothing compared to Jeb Bush’s $82 million.  The only person who managed a smaller budget than Trump, who did not drop out before the end of February, was Carson.  However, Carson only lasted into March.  The fact that Trump kept on such a small budget is not what is really impressive, but the fact that he won on such a small budget is.
He was able to win because he used free media well.  According to the New York Times, Trump has utilized approximately $2 billion worth of free media coverage.  A lot of this is coming from his use of Twitter and other social media sites, not just television coverage.

By the end of the primary Bush had spent over $130 million on his campaign.  $81 million went towards television ads alone.  Trump did not spend any money on television ads, and instead utilized the free media he was getting.

Even in the general election Trump has managed to keep his campaign budget smaller than Clinton’s.  However, this election is not over yet so it has yet to be seen if he will be successful with this tactic yet again.
