Nixon Cartoon

In 1968, eight years after his infamous televised debate, Richard Nixon was once again in the middle of a Presidential Campaign. This time around, Nixon was up again Hubert H. Humphrey from the Democratic party. The political cartoon titled “ ‘ And maybe catch a chill? … Never!’ ”, created by Charles Bissell, depicts Richard Nixon sitting my a fire with a sign outside his window saying “Come Out and Debate HHH”. After his catastrophic televised debate with the late John F. Kennedy, Nixon refused to go back on the air and debate with Humphrey. There was much stipulation that the reason Nixon refused the countless request to debate on television was because he was afraid that doing so would drop his popularity in the national polls like they did when he faced Kennedy. Even though it was eight years and two presidents later, Nixon still suffered from his terrible performance during the 1960 debate, and he was still a very prominent focus for political cartoons.
