Concept 3
In “Writing for Visual Media” by Anthony Friedman, the definition of visual metaphor is “like literary metaphor, an image that allows an intensification of meaning by transference of qualities of one object to another. A visual metaphor is usually comprised of one or more visuals, such as an image or video that creates a visual association. For example, I created a meme as an advertisement for my mock company and product, Duality and the Dual Thermos for my Know Your Meme project.
A visual metaphor can be used in art, photographs, memes, and other creative outlets. An example would be the graffiti artist, Banksy, created artwork on a brick wall of the World Trade Center with a flower. Visual metaphors are meant to evoke image or images that in association or relating to image already being viewed.
Memes are the perfect example of this.
Memes are comprised of a macro-image and text. Usually the macro-image and text pair well with one another and create an association. For example, the College Freshman meme usually has text that makes one visualize images having to do with college such as buying textbooks, being late to class, fraternities, going to parties, getting drunk, etc.
I used visual metaphors during this semester in blog posts and presentations that involve memes. I create memes using the meme generator app. Using photos from online, I remixed memes that commented on a political figure and advertised a product. Memes are useful a visual metaphors because they can get a point across with a straightforward image and short text.
