From the Club to the Classroom: Jazz Education Through the Ages

Formal Jazz Education

Jazz started to become recognized as an art form in the period following World War II. After the war, Jazz was seen as a distinctly American piece of culture that was to be celebrated. Because of this, numerous institutions began offering jazz programs as part of college curriculums, moving jazz education from the club to the classroom. This section explores formal jazz education in depth. It begins with a brief history of formal education, followed by an interactive map showing colleges with jazz programs by the decade. After this overview, a number of opinions are offered by musicians and scholars alike, both on the teaching of jazz in general and the more complex issue of teaching jazz improvisation. Finally, we offer a glimpse of what jazz education looks like today, and how it has changed through the years.
