From the Club to the Classroom: Jazz Education Through the Ages

Race and Jazz Education

Throughout history, we expect jazz to play a major role in the movement of human equality. It is one of the most influential music genre that has affected the life of a huge population. However, having an African American root, jazz education moves toward to a white-dominated field rather than a more mixed and balanced one.

In the above two tables, we chose the two institution that first established a jazz undergraduate program. From the numbers, we can clearly see that the number of faculty who are white takes the vast majority of both school. Also, the number of male educators is always greater than that of the female educators by far. This uneven distribution has been a problem since the early 21st century. Also, it is still a question that whether this change of jazz education from a more African American based occupation to a white dominated career is due to the institutionalization of jazz education or social changes after the second World War.
