Digital Assignment: Mapping The Tempest

Like many of Shakespeare's comedies, The Tempest takes place in a single day and on one location, obeying the unities of time and space. And yet, like other romances, The Tempest has quite a bit of movement; as with the ship tossed by its name-sake, characters are thrust into unfamiliar territory, bringing characters far from home within a still-small geographical plane.

In this assignment, you'll use Google Maps to visualize the play's locations.

1) Before you start your work in Google Maps, you'll need to review the play and look closely for place names; you'll also want to find descriptions of the island and other places invoked within the play.2) Using freely available or fair-use images, compile several pictures that assist viewers in imagining the locations depicted in the play. Places to find images include Flickr's Creative Common photos,  Getty Open Content, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Open Access/Public Domain collection, and the New York Public Library's Public Domain Images. You may also find other sources for images such as Internet Archive; feel free to use images that you create and/or own in your map as well.

3) Once you've got your list of places, associated phrases/portions of the play, and fair-use images, take a look at the instructions here for making a map on Google Maps. Follow the directions for adding places, information and other markers, and adding photos.
