Brakeman

The brakeman inspects trains for safety, helps with switching, watches the track for hazards, gives signals, and applies the brakes.
Additionally, according to rules 804 and 213, all members of train and engine crews must:
  • observe the indication displayed by train order signals,
  • be prepared to and pick up any train orders or messages,
  • keep a sharp lookout for signals displayed by other trains,
  • keep in mind the requirements of the rules, timetables, train orders, special instructions, bulletins or general orders and messages affecting the movement of their train,
  • call attention to or take necessary action in event of any oversight or mistake,
  • and be on call 24/7 – no set schedule.
